Magento – Why No New Screencasts Since 5th Jan 2008?

Magento is the leading e-commerce platform rapidly gaining in popularity. This magento discussion was started by Stuarts 0n March 27 2009

This shows how to use various features of Magento (which is absolutely essential in such a complicated piece of software).

And yet there have been no new screencasts since 5th Jan 2008.

Thats almost 15 months ago!!!

Its almost as though you have given up trying to actually show people how to make use of the product.

When can we expect new screencasts to be produced?

Magento – Critique on basic template

I had a guy design this template for me with tweaks I needed. The inventpry is not loaded yet. The images in the middle and those odd images to the left or right will not be used. But the basic template and locations of basic needs like search, newsletter search by brand etc. and overall look is what I’m hoping for critique on.

Magento – My Gripe About Magento

Magento is the leading e-commerce platform rapidly gaining in popularity. This magento discussion was started by galaxyre 0n March 26 2009

Ok, please done come down hard on me. I just want to place my experience with Magento.

The first time I saw what it could do, I said WOW! I MUST SWITCH NOW!

I am currently running CRELoaded 6.3.3 B2B – works wonderfully, but it’s limited, especially once you’ve hit that ceiling. Plus the code is so full of bugs, and it’s just scattered and messy. But, I’ve used it religiously for 4 years now, starting off with OSCommerce, and eventually moving over to CRELoaded. But now, seeing Magento, I must have it. Which leads me to this post.

I have been working on trying to get Magento properly set up on one of our sites for the past 4 months now to no avail. It’s one thing after the other. The issues aren’t the code or any specific errors or issues. The issues are more… HOW THE HECK DOES THIS THING WORK?

My main gripe is that you are not informed that you need above average knowledge of XML, PHP, as well as other coding languages to get Magento to do what you want it to do. Magento was NOT developed for novices or beginners in this world, but more for developers and coders. Which is fine, but I wish I would have been warned, before spending 4 months of precious time on this only to get nowhere closer to launching the new Magento commerce site. Which sucks, because it’s such a great product. I have an above average knowledge of PHP, and minimal knowledge of XML. Thanks to OSCommerce & CRE, I’ve had to educate myself on PHP to get the software to do what I want it to do, as well as to fix the various bugs. But for Magento… I can’t even begin to crack the surface of what goes where, and does what. The file structure is insanely complicated, with folder after folder after folder for nothing. I have to travel 8 directories down to find a simple image file.

Perhaps this is done on purpose in order to purchase their varied support options, which I would gladly do, but it is probably cheaper to just hire someone to install, customize, and then show me how it all works.

Lastly, I know this is open-source, but even the minimal support that one does receive from other members is full of unanswered questions. Many end similar to this…. “….i think that’s what you do. It worked for me, but I don’t know how I got it to work.” So that doesn’t help much.

Although it’s a fantastic product, with TONS of options. All of these features come at a price, and unfortunately for me, that price is time spent learning the Magento way, which I do not have.

Tasks such as a simple product import are made complicated for no reason. Forget about mass adding categories, or mass image import. I can’t even update our inventory on hand via an XML feed – there is just no easy way to do this, other than to modify core files – which is what I don’t want to do.

So, I have decided to abandon our Magento project until it is more simplified, or at least until I have a better working knowledge of it’s coding structure. I’m looking at this as a business owner, end-user… and not as a programmer/designer. And that’s where the issues lies. I just don’t have the time nor resources to master this system just yet.

Thank you for a wonderful product, and I wish Magento and every user the best of success. It’s just too much for me right now.

Magento – Am I adding Products Correctly or Is there a Better way?

Magento is the leading e-commerce platform rapidly gaining in popularity. This magento discussion was started by draftzero 0n March 26 2009

My products are custom printed materials such as Business Cards, Postcards, etc… (that i sell in batches). So usually my configurable attributes are:

Amount: (100, 250, 500, 1000, 2500)
Paper: (4 options)
Print: (Single Sided, Double Sided)

Based on the “Create Configuration Product Tutorial,” I have been adding each configurable options (so for business cards, 40 different options/products)… Some of my printing products consists of alot more different options… probably some with over 100+ different combination….

If this is the only way this can be done, then I will do it, but if someone else knows of a more faster/better way… please enlighten me!

Magento – Set Default store / adding products to different website/store

Magento is the leading e-commerce platform rapidly gaining in popularity. This magento discussion was started by 3mushrooms 0n March 25 2009

I recently posted about what i thought was a database issue, but turns out it seems to be related to the “stores”. I have two stores, both stores share similar products etc………. however only when the 1st store is set as default the products actually work, almost like they’re not showing for the website, and when i do cache refresh, they start to show up but pricing and pricing nav layer is gone completely.

Basically……

One store products were added too first via Magento API. Then in the control panel, i have added some to a second website. The 2nd website is actually switch to use the code “base” but the 1st site is set to default. when i navigate to the 2nd site (the one that is the base) the thing has its skin, etc… but is using the 1st site (don’t ask) as an identifyer to mangeto as i noticed it is using its CMS block for the home page (title, meta description is of site one) but looks and works fine. Now soon as i check the “set as default” in websites config for the 2nd site, most products are gone completely, like they were never added to the site. When i re-add them (we’re talking like over 1000+) to the site, they then show up but out of stock, then when i re-index the stock quantity or whatever in cache management, they don’t show out of stock anymore, but have no price. These are grouped products with simple products. no layered price nav either, but when i click on one, the simple products with the prices are there and can be added to the cart.

So whats missing??????? that is the question. I dont mind going into the DB to fix it if i can, but this is a pain, it seems like something when added to the 2nd site was missing in the DB compared to when added to the 1st site.

It seems like it might be the catalog pricing index…… ??

Magento – Multiple Shipping disappears when more than one item added

Magento is the leading e-commerce platform rapidly gaining in popularity. This magento discussion was started by flowerpenshop_com 0n March 25 2009

Will only show “Multiple Address” link with ONE item in cart.

I added an item to my cart – went to check out – saw “Multiple Address” link. I added a second of SAME item to cart (to have something to send to separate addresses) – went to check out and “Multiple Address” link is now gone. I delete the second item and the link is back.

UPDATE:

OK…

1. You can set the MAXIMUM number of items a shopper can have and select MULTIPLE SHIPPING ADDRESSES. Mine is set to “100”.

2. I sell flower pens—pens with a flower attached to the top smile
3. I have an item with “tiered” pricing that gives a discount according to how many they buy
4. I placed an order for “75” single flower pens, meaning I had ONE item in my cart – upon checkout – I WAS able to select Multiple address as my 100 is not yet reached.
5. I then went and order ANOTHER “75” singles, which left me with TWO items of my cart, each having a quantity of 75 for a total of “150”, exceeding my “100”.

That, I understand… That’s why the “Multiple Address” link disappeared upon checkout…

But here’s what I found. When I only have ONE item with “75” quantity, I clicked “Multiple Address” link and it was asking me for 75 different addresses to send ONE pen each to!!! Big bugarooni!

Sooooo… the multiple address feature is not so good if a shopper wants to buy 75 pens and ship them to Dallas and 1 pen bouquet and ship it to Houston.

Magento – Attribute options bug

Magento is the leading e-commerce platform rapidly gaining in popularity. This magento discussion was started by Ron Phillips 0n March 25 2009

I’m kind of sure I mentioned this before a few versions ago, but there seems to be some bugs in the attribute options edit form. After getting several option entries entered for a custom attribute, we discovered some typos, double entries and misordering. When we try to delete or edit an option, nothing happens. When we try to add new weights this sometimes causes the weight and sometimes the front end option name to be lost.

It’s very discouraging. I don’t know if this has been addressed in the last few updates or not, but it hadn’t in the various we installed prior.

Currently running 1.6. We’ve been focused on maintaining the store. If this issue has been fixed in newer releases, hopefully when we move to a new server and upgrade this will be behind us. I hope.

Magento – Rounding Error? GT Base and GT Purchased don’t match on my orders for multiple items

Magento is the leading e-commerce platform rapidly gaining in popularity. This magento discussion was started by roco 0n March 25 2009

Whenever I get an order for multiple products, I get a mismatch in the “GT Base” and “GT Purchased” prices. The problem is the customer thinks they are buying the item for the “GT Purchased” price(shown in the cart interface), but it is the “GT Base” price that is being passed to Authorize.net for capture.

I have attached the screenshot of my sales order page with 2 problem orders listed. The first order row was for 20 parts and the second order row was for 5 parts.

Is this fixable? a rounding error? I only have one currency selected in the admin panel (US Dollars), so why would these ever be different?

Magento – Is the SOAP API missing some very valuable calls

Magento is the leading e-commerce platform rapidly gaining in popularity. This magento discussion was started by angelleye 0n March 25 2009

I’ve been playing with the SOAP API and I love what I see. I’m a little worried, though, that I don’t see an easy way to create attributes and attribute sets via the API. I can easily display existing attributes and sets, but I need to create them.

I’ve got a few different clients that each have the same type of business model. Similar products, similar attribute set requirements. If I spend the time to create all of the attributes/sets in 1 installation I’d like to make it easy on the rest of them in one way or another.

I don’t see any option in the Export Profiles for working with attributes. Again, I see the API will let me display attributes/sets/options but I don’t see anything about creating attributes/sets. I’d like to basically create a template that I can use to automatically setup magento installs with this collection of attribute sets.

Also, and more importantly, I don’t see a way to create new orders via the API. I do see how to create a new invoice from an existing order, but I need to create new orders from scratch. I was hoping to utilize the SOAP API and PayPal IPN to have eBay orders come into Magento automatically. I was stumped again, though, because there doesn’t seem to be a sales_order.create method..??

If none of that is possible, what about some documentation on exactly which fields in the MySQL DB I could include to add new orders directly?

Magento – Magento not running the mysql4-install-0.1.0.php for my module

Magento is the leading e-commerce platform rapidly gaining in popularity. This magento discussion was started by MA_19 0n February 25 2009

I was testing out some ideas using a module I’d created using the module creator, when I decided to add some new database tables to the mysql4-install-0.1.0.php file for my module.

Everything I found on the net said that Magento would create the new tables next time the module ran, but this didn’t seem to be happening.
I tried a lot of things, but in the end I found that the first time Magento reads a module’s etc/config.xml it writes the value of into the core_config table in the database.

Magento will not then run the mysql4-install-0.1.0.php file again whilst the version number in core_config matches the one in the config.xml

I removed the entry for my module in core_config. Magento then ran the mysql4-install-0.1.0.php and created my new tables smile

That one took me a while to figure out – so I thought I’d share.
