Magento – Manufacturer information pages

Magento is the leading e-commerce platform rapidly gaining in popularity. This magento discussion was started by MandS 0n June 24 2008

I like to request an extension/option to have information pages for the manufacturers in your store. Manufacturer information page could contain logos and company info about the companies that make your products.

SEF URLs would be good too smile Something like

shop.com/manufacturers/manufacturer-name

Would anyone else be interested in this feature?

Magento – A Couple of newbie questions

Magento is the leading e-commerce platform rapidly gaining in popularity. This magento discussion was started by CypherUk 0n June 23 2008

I’ve come across Magento recently and so far i have been very impressed.

I have been using another eCommerce package for about 4 years and now think that it is time for a fresh perspective.

I do have a couple of questions tho. 1) is there anywhere i can access new modules/contributions? and Are mods/contribs ‘drop-in’ or is hacking of the code required?

I look forward to rebuilding my empire on Magento smile

Mark smile

Ack! not a good start!!…. I realised i posted this on the wrong board red face could one of the mods/admins please move it?

Magento – Attributes/ Options Template

Magento is the leading e-commerce platform rapidly gaining in popularity. This magento discussion was started by rumblepup 0n June 21 2008

However, this resolution in incomplete in my opinion. I’m a long time internet entrepreneur, and after about 10 years selling products online, I can tell you that this feature is INCREDIBLY important.
Right now, if I was selling single items, magento would be perfect, but items with multiple attributes, such as mine, I can’t even consider magento because it’s lacking an attributes/ options template.

For instance, my products fall into groups because of the options available. I have, say 20 products that all have the same basic options.
Size
Color
Trim

If I had to add attributes one by one, with over 20 products, this process becomes EXCEEDINGLY time consuming and wasteful. The quicker I can get my product online, the quicker it can get crawled by the SE’s, and I can promote it and sell it. Also, there is the manpower involved. If I’m doing this alone, not a big cost, but I’d never get it done. If I have employees entering products, they would not be working on orders, they’d be working on entering product options and not selling the products. I could spend a day on one product alone.

Now, in my current e-commerce engine, I can create attribute/options templates, that I can apply to a product. Once applied, I can then modify those attributes if they vary slightly.

Let’s say I create an attribute template like this:
Size
-Small
-Medium
-Large
-XLarge (Add 5.00)
-XXLarge (Add 5.00)

Color
-Black
-White
-Grey
-Red
-Green (Add 3.00)
-Purple (Add 5.00)

Trim
-NONE
-White
-Black
-Silver
-Gold (Add 5.00)
-Gunmetal (Add 10.00)

Now, with my shirts, I can create a “Billy Baldwin I’m Late to the Game” shirt that has all these option. Instead of entering them one by one, I go to a drop down menu of templates, apply it, and blammo, I’m done. All the options and price markups are done.

Now, I add a “Alec Baldwin Drunk Like Your Mother” shirt, and it has “almost” the same options. As the above scenario points out, I add the product, pick this template from a drop down, and it applies the template.

After applying the template, I remove
Size
-Small

Then I remove
Color
-Purple
BUT edit
Color
- Green (Add 3.00) and I change it to
- Green “no upcharge’

Then I edit
Trim
and ADD
- Multi (Add 15.00)

Now I did not have add each and every single one of those attributes all over again, and I could edit the ones that where slightly different. This is a humongous advantage and very efficient. Even in my accounting software, I can add and delete options. You don’t need a SKU for each and every one.

Further. When I pair these items with say PANTS, and each pant has attributes as well, my current system shows the kitted items and each items attributes separately. Like this.

Tshirt
Size
Color
Trim

Pants
Size
Color
Trim

After testing out magento for awhile, I would love to move to this platform, and support it as well. But these are VERY important features that I or any other multi-attribute product merchant just cannot do without.

Thank you for taking this into consideration. I hope the community understand the need for this feature.

Magento – Membership site—recurring billing

Magento is the leading e-commerce platform rapidly gaining in popularity. This magento discussion was started by Rick W 0n June 21 2008

I was wondering if anyone uses or could use Magento to run a membership site where people order a product/service and are automatically billed on a monthly basis. Are there any examples of this and how is it done?

Magento – How can I get the full breadcrumb on a product page?

Magento is the leading e-commerce platform rapidly gaining in popularity. This magento discussion was started by Shpigford 0n June 18 2008

I’m choosing to not have the category id in the product url’s…but doing that inexplicably removes the full breadcrumb to the product.

Example, I have http://example.com/product-name and when I do that, the breadcrumb is just “Home » Product Name”.

If I do http://example.comm/product-name-1 then I get the full breadcrumb (“Home » Category » Sub-Category » Product Name”)…but I don’t want the id in the URL.

So…how can I get the full breadcrumb in this case?

Magento – Joomla /WordPress/ Drupal Integration – Top Priority

Magento is the leading e-commerce platform rapidly gaining in popularity. This magento discussion was started by TomC 0n June 10 2008

Now that Magento has been released in it’s stable form, a TOP PRIORITY for the Development Team should be to work diligently on developing a clean component integration of Magento with the major/most popular Content Management Systems out there – namely Joomla, WordPress and Drupal.

The user base for these three CMS is, literally, within in the millions. Imagine the wide open market that Magento will be opening itself up to when it finally realizes a stable/clean integration package for these CMS packages.

I know this is even more so for WordPress – but as a Joomla user, I can attest to the fact that there are thousands upon thousands of Joomla CMS users (on all levels), as well as dozens of third-party extension developers and high quality Temnplate Clubs. As one of the most common “complaints” I have seen is the difficulty of modifying/customizing within the Magento template system, imagine how many new users could/would flock to Magento with a ready-to-go component integration package for a CMS that millions are already accustomed to working with. (I can almost guarantee you that VirtueMart will be blown out of the water).

Not only this, but you would very likely see a spark of energy amongst the Extension Developers and Template Clubs themselves toward developing products that work with Magento – be they new/exciting extensions, templates, modules, etc.
-

Greater market compatibility = greater exposure = larger customer /community base = opportunity for increased revenue via vendor adversitement, support plans, vendor/affiliate agreements, etc.

-

So, to the Magento Development Team – you have your product, and it’s a FANTASTIC product. It’s now time to take it to the next level and exponentially increase Magento’s user/community base by concentrating your efforts on development of a Magento component integration system with Joomla, WordPress and Drupal.
(Since I’m biased, start with Joomla)

Magento – add to cart page load time in less than 2 seconds

Magento is the leading e-commerce platform rapidly gaining in popularity. This magento discussion was started by SimpleHelix.com 0n June 10 2008

The fix is simple and some of you might have already guessed it, it is APC …

We were using eaccelerator / xcache for our opcode caching but after having a go on APC tonight, it looks like Magento turns on it’s rocket boosters once APC is activated over other opcode cachers.

Before with eAccelerator/xcache:

it was about 3-5 seconds to add to cart.

After with APC,

it’s been pretty much instant, about a second.

And the you need to place this block just underneath global:

Magento – Add multiple products to cart – example

Magento is the leading e-commerce platform rapidly gaining in popularity. This magento discussion was started by uni-man 0n June 09 2008

On a site I’m building, customers want to add many grocery items from a category into their cart with as few clicks as possible. For example the customer might want 10 carrots, 2 broccoli, 1kg of onions, 2k of potatoes (which are all on the same page / category).

Magento – Tracking Information Not Displaying in Emails

Magento is the leading e-commerce platform rapidly gaining in popularity. This magento discussion was started by hiramh 0n June 05 2008

our client really needs shipment tracking information to appear in the order emails. When I test orders myself, add test tracking information, then click on Send Tracking Information – the email is missing tracking data.

Where are the emails configured? I see Transactional Emails but do not see how this would help. How do we get tracking data (AND customer comments – which also do not show up) into the email templates so customers can view their tracking & comments information??

Magento – Import Bulk Attributes

Magento is the leading e-commerce platform rapidly gaining in popularity. This magento discussion was started by scottrill2 0n June 03 2008

I had a question I could not find an answer to through search. It deals with multiple attributes and how to import them without having to do them by hand.

I make all natural soaps. As some people are allergic to certain ingredients, I want an “ingredients” attribute that is searchable and is displayed on the product page. Obviously with different bases, moisturizers, exfoliants, fragrances etc.. there are thousands of possible ingredients.

I went ahead and created one product manually. I also created the “ingredients” attribute as a “Multiple Select” and I made it visible on product pages and searchable etc etc..

I then exported this one product and used it as a template, and added a few more products and imported it.

Sku, description, price etc all are fine EXCEPT the “ingredients” attribute. I was hoping since I created the attribute it would automatically add the new ingredients from the new products to that attribute, but it does not.

I must say that adding labels/options to the multiple select attribute through admin menu is exceedingly slow. And with thousands of ingredients to do it manually is just ludicrous.

Is there a way the import/export feature can be used for more than just products or customers? I also have lots of compliments for some of my products that I would like to add as well in the review and ratings section, but again going into each product and manually adding things is slow.

Am I doing something wrong or is there an easier way of doing it and I’m not seeing it? Any info would be appreciated.
